AG Jeans Phoebe in 19 Year SplinterThe Claire Shirt by AG, Attico Mules, APC Half Moon Bag

This season a pair of statement jeans is a key style update for any wardrobe.

AG have nailed this trend with the Phoebe in 19 Year Splinter. Whilst a year or 2 ago I lusted after the most distressed and ripped denim, these days I prefer my rips to whisper on the hem of my jeans. This pair features a high waist, an uneven hem and two toned denim- points that are interesting but not over the top. I’m after a cleaner, “more European” look, that can work casually but also be dressed up. Pairing these jeans with a striped shirt creates a chic, but timeless look.

I love the versatility of these pieces and am certain they will become wardrobe staples.

Key features to look out for when shopping for statement denim:

  • Length– I prefer a cropped length to show off my shoes. Pair your shoe of choice with fishnet tights/socks for a very “of the moment” look.
  • Hem– look for a step, raw, or uneven hem.
  • Wash– I’m loving blue washes at the moment- especially vintage blue (think Levis).
  • Extra detail– embroidery, patchwork or two toned denim. Choose one not all.

Happy shopping!

Beauty is painless

New Balance 620 sneakers, Zara coat, AG jeans, Rag & Bone shirt, Dylan Kain bag

I confess that I’m a traitor to the true definition of a fashionista- when it comes to clothes, my default position is comfort.

So when sneakers transformed into a “lifestyle” item, it was a joyous moment.  I love the unexpected juxtaposition of wearing a dressier outfit with a cool pair of kicks.

Whilst I’ve gone for no brainer styling, wearing these New Balance 620s with a pair of ripped jeans, I can’t wait to wear them with an elegant skirt.  In this context beauty is in fact painless.

Denim and lace

Asilio the Label white walls crop top, AG jeans, Kara Backpack, Acne Jensen boots

Lace is something I’ve always loved- on other people. I’ve never been a “girly” dresser and lace is the epitome of pretty.  However I’ve found that paring lace  back with more minimal, urban items creates a look which I’m comfortable wearing. It’s pretty, interesting but not overdone.

The perfect plaid

Plaid was major in the 90s. Who can forget the iconic plaid skirt suits worn by Cher and Dion in Clueless? Fast forward to the present and plaid has been resurrected in every colour and form possible, and can be worn be it Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn.  It’s a pattern that lends itself well to all seasons, but in particular I think it is beautiful for Winter.

Marc by Marc Jacobs plaid sweater, AG Jeans, Alexander Wang Bag, Acne Studios Rita Leather Jacket

The primary colours of this Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater is more classic than grunge (so will last the test of time) and I love how the colours really “pop” especially when pared with black.  The clever thing about this sweater is that it doubles as a cardigan adding to its versatility.  It’s an item that can be styled a number of ways but I think is just about perfect with a uniform of skinny jeans and a leather jacket.

Simple Sundays

Strong winds spoilt our plans to road trip down south for a cheeky surf. So instead of being up at the crack of dawn, we vegetated until midday, lolling around in laziness.  When we decided to venture out in the real world seeking caffeine, a casual outfit was a must.  What could epitomise casual more than blue jeans and white tee shirt?  The classic perennial has had an upgrade thanks to ripped jeans and accessories du jour – a plaid shirt tied around the hips and cross body bag. Albeit ubiquitous, I’m still loving this look.

Feeling Blue

Distressed denim, plaid, leopard, chambray, corset lace up shoes.  Every possible trend mashed up into one outfit.

Tragic pigeon holding wads of cash you might say, but wearing it feels very right.

Distressed denim is tricky and can quickly descend into trashy.  Hunting the right pair down may take a bit of patience if you are not nimble with a pair of scissors (alas I am not).

These AG jeans which I snapped up online from Saks Fifth Avenue during the black Friday sales (maybe a size too small, oops!- here’s hoping they streeeetttcchh!) have rips in the right places (rips on knees being important) and just the right amount of distress.

When my jeans arrived, I was so pleased with the shade of blue as I realised that this item would breathe new life into my chambray Acne blazer. (I had recently been wearing this blazer to work, so it was dangerously teetering into the work wardrobe category).  Denim on denim can work!

This Equipment plaid shirt is in high rotation in my wardobe, with leopard being the perfect clashing counterpart.

Adriano Goldschmeid 16 year swap meet jean, Acne blazer, Equipment shirt, Willow walk shoes, Michael Kors bag

I completed this outfit with a pair of Willow corset lace ups. Whilst my feet look like they’re in a prison, looks can be deceiving because these shoes with “triple padded sole technology” are ridiculously comfortable.
