Insider Crop Step Fray Jeans by Mother, Chosen by Tuchuzy camisole, Asos Belt, Dylan Kain Bag, Vialis shoes from Shoe I Am

Skinny, boyfriend , distressed- these jeans have been solid staples for a number of seasons. However if you’re looking for a new pair of jeans, it’s time to bypass these styles and upgrade your denim game.

Refresh your wardrobe with a new shape- think wide legs, cropped flares or full length flares in a modern fit, or focus on a raw hem.

The raw, fringed hem has been haunting me for months and I finally found the perfect incarnation with the Insider Crop Step Fray by Mother Denim.  There are so many subtle details that I love, the asymmetric raw hem that will only look better with wear and tear, the cropped length, slight kicked flare, high waist, and classic dark blue wash.  In terms of fit, these jeans fit true to size and are super comfortable thanks to the inclusion of elastane in the fabric.

So if you’ve been living in skinny jeans for the past few years, go beyond your style comfort zone and look at investing in a new denim style.

Organic by John Patrick Slip Dress, Jac + Jack Tee, Kara backpack, Converse sneakers

So you’ve probably been seeing slip dresses appearing in shops and invading your instagram feed. Here are 3 reasons why you need to join the slip dress revival:

  1. It’s the perfect layering piece and really easy to style- It can be worn on its own, layered over a t shirt, over trousers, or under a sheer dress.
  2. A slip dress will extend your wardrobe and transition easily from Summer to Winter and from day to night. I’m envisaging this with an oversized cardigan for winter- easy and effortless.
  3. It’s timeless.  Whilst currently being a trendy piece and a nod to the 90s trend, it’s also an item that will last the test of time.

Have I convinced you? Will you be adding a slip dress to your wardrobe?

The pants you need now- cropped flares

George Alice cropped flares, Organic by John Patrick slip dress, Dylan Kain bag, Kobe Husk Heels

Cropped flares have become a surprisingly versatile item in my wardrobe.  They’re easier to wear then full length flares (no heels or hemming required) and the silhouette adds a point of interest in any outfit.  Layering under dresses, wearing them with off shoulder tops (long or cropped), the styling possibilities are endless, and always looks fantastic.  These Georgia Alice pants are my  holy grail- the frayed hem being the cherry on top of the sundae.

Instagrammable Cafes- Kuala Lumpur

On a recent trip to Malaysia I discovered a burgeoning café/dessert scene.

The décor in these cafes appear to have been specifically designed  for Instagram and the food is mostly western with Asian influences and flavour combinations.

These cafes starkly contrast the no frills hawker stalls which sell excellent food but can sometimes lack ambiance. Be prepared to fork out a  lot more dosh at these cafes however- pretty comes at a price!  For your reference, a coffee at these type of establishments will set you back 10 ringgit or more (you can buy a plate of noodles from a hawker stall for around 6 ringgit).

Here are 3 “instagrammable cafes” in Kuala Lumpur which I visited during my visit:

Thursdvys

Pronounced simply as “Thursdays” (The “v” is used as a marketing tool) one of the owners of this café used to study in Melbourne and it shows. The café design is achingly cool and they make pretty good coffee too!  Bonus points for being a café that is kind to cats- they put out food for tem and cats will often be found lounging in the outdoor part of the café.

Softsrve

Another misspelt word, another cute café. Specifically a dessert café which specialises in (duh) softserve ice cream. The base flavours offered are cereal milk (influenced from the famous cereal milk softserve from Milk Bar in New York), chocolate and oolong tea. You then choose your choice of topping. Dry ice is placed in a separate bottom cup, which creates a mystical, ethereal mist of smoke that serves no flavour purpose but looks ridiculously cool .

I had the cereal milk, and to be honest, I felt It lacked depth and flavour. It was a little bit bland and the ice cream itself was creamy but not indulgent.

The oolong tea was quite strong in flavour and a bit bitter. Personally I think this could have been milder so as not to compete so strongly with the toppings.

Anywhoo, flavour aside, the softserves  and décor are very aesthetically pleasing.

Second Sundays

Textured white plaster walls with adorable ornaments- the perfect background for capturing food shots.

Btw this café does an awesome dish of pandan pancakes, cococnut ice cream and gula mulaka syrup – I’m drooling thinking of this flavour combination.

Denim Pinafore by Viktoria and Woods, Rings by Pandora, Lacoste Sneakers, APC bag
The best aspect of the 70s revival is the abundance of denim in all shapes, styles and forms.
I love demin for it’s casual nonchalance and efforless vibe- it’s just so easy to wear.
This denim pinafore by Viktoria and Woods is to me the perfect summer dress. The midi length instantly makes it chic and classic, but it’s also casual enough to be worn just about anywhere.
Generally I tend to focus more on clothes rather than accessories, however it is absolutly true that accessories can transform an outfit instantly. Stacking rings is one of my favourite ways to elevate any look and my rings of choice are by Pandora. Pandora create beautifully crafted designs of quality that can stand alone or create a big impact when stacked together. I’ll be adding more to my collection for their styling versatility- a wardrobe must!

I have previously written a post about The Peach Box, a brand that makes on trend jewellery at affordable prices.  The Peach Box is launching their sister brand called Marc Bale, with a collection of modern, stylish watches.  Currently there are 4 designs in the collection – all beautiful and versatile- making it very hard to choose just one! After much indecision, I finally settled on a black and gold design a timeless combination which nevertheless makes a big impact.  The watch is beautiful quality and looks perfect paired with The Peach Box jewellery.

Skirt and Blazer by Ellery, Bandeau by Maticevski, Heels by Kobe Husk, Bag by Alexander Wang

Ellery is my new obsession.

Her designs exude an editorial, avant garde aesthetic however manage to still be wearable and practical.

This slim boyfriend blazer with gold buttons teamed with a maxi skirt makes a very elegant outfit suitable for a night out or the races. The cut of this skirt is inspired and moves so beautifully when worn.

I initially wanted a black bandeau to go with this skirt however I serendipitously stumbled upon this maticevski grey mesh number. The grey mesh adds another colour dimension to this look and is infinitely more interesting than black.

Double Denim

Zara shirt, Levis jeans, Viktoria and Woods coat, MCQ Alexander McQueen boots, Alexander Wang bag, Isabel Marant belt

Double denim used to a shudder inducing fashion crime.

However this unlikely pairing is now back in fashion  and the stigma associated with double denim has definitely been shaken off.

Personally I prefer shades of denim which are similar to each other as they seem to create a more harmonious look. Strong accessories with silver hardware offset the “matchy matchy” appearance. Wearing distressed denim also helps to keep the look modern.

Will you be giving this look a go this time round?

Jumping on that 70s bandwagon

Zara denim mini and camel coat, Asilio lace top, Acne Jensen boots, Alexander Wang Bag

70s fashion is currently in full swing with flares, tan suede, fringe, and bohemian peasants blouses invading stores.  If your clothes err more on the minimal side, 70s fashion may seem too much and too busy. However  there are ways to incorporate this trend subtly in you wardrobe.

Take for example my nod to this trend with a denim mini from Zara.  The a line, button down shape screams 70s, however it is actually a versatile piece that will happily sit along side my other wardrobe usuals. I’m thinking of teaming this skirt with simple tees and sneakers for no fuss summer wear, or slouchy sweaters for cooler days.

I’ve amped up the 70s vibe in this outfit by pairing it with a lace top (throwback to crochet) and a camel coat.

My other tips for injecting this trend into your wardrobe subtly is to focus on the accessories. Perhaps purchase a fringe bag that will dress up a simple outfit, or a pair of of killer platform mules.  Think of items that will able to mix and match with your current items  so you won’t be regretting these purchases later.

Alfa Alfa Double Sphere Necklace

When I was younger I used to love wearing big, bold statement jewellery. Nowadays, however, I gravitate towards minimal, subtle pieces that whisper rather than shout. Alfa Alfa is a Melbourne label that designs and curates,  beautiful modern jewellery. Their point of difference is their unusual choice of media  – several pieces in their collection feature concrete, evoking industrial minimalism.  I particularly love Alfa Alfa’s signature necklace- an interesting juxtaposition of a concrete sphere and delicate freshwater pearl.

Alfa Alfa’s designs not only sit beautifully on their own, but they also integrate seamlessly with other pieces. Simply perfect additions to any wardrobe.
