Third Form “New Crush Halter Dress”, Ego shoes, Holly Ryan Wavee Necklace, APC Bag

Being a minimalist is about appreciating and finding interest in the smaller details- whether it be the texture of the material or an interesting cut or structure.

Australian label Third Form has mastered this – every piece is thoughtfully designed, sophisticated and progressive.

So a black dress is elevated thanks to an on trend cut away shoulder design, pleated texture and flared sleeves. The backless feature is perfectly balanced by the longer hemline. Edgy accessories compliment the design and help to tie the whole look together.

In my books, clean lines with a focus on interesting features will never ever look ordinary or boring.

Aris Clothing “High Neck Cut Out Top”, Christopher Esber Skirt, APC half moon bag, Lacoste Sneakers, Triwa Watch and bracelet, Natasha Schweitzer earring

When I shop, the first thing I look for in an item is versatility.  If it cannot be easily mixed and matched with my existing wardrobe and cannot be worn in multiple situations, then it will more than likely be left in the store.

Which is why I love discovering new labels whose purpose is to deliver versatile clothing that transitions seamlessly from work to the weekend.  Aris Clothing is a perfect example – they design beautiful, quality pieces that are minimal but with a twist.  I’m wearing the “High Neck Cut Out Top” a simple design made interesting thanks to the neck detail.  By pairing this top with a mini skirt and sneakers it’s an easy weekend look.  Styling this top for work is a no brainer- simply add a high waist pencil skirt , blazer and a pair of pumps.

Buy less, buy smarter and you’ll never be left staring at a wardrobe full of clothes with “nothing to wear”.

66 The Label Scarf, MCQ blazer, J Brand Selena crop  jeans, Ego boots,  Mejuri ring

With off shoulder styles dominating, and all that exposed décolletage it was no wonder that neck accessories simultaneously became one of the breakout trends. We have been adorning our necks with cotton bandannas, skinny scarves, chokers and millions of delicate layered necklaces.  But what should we be looking to next? The answer is the silk neck scarf, preferably in a paisley print (a la Ellery). Whilst not ground breaking (the silk scarf is really a classic item), it is a versatile piece that can be worn around the neck, wrist , or your bag, and importantly feels like a dream on your neck.

How to extend your wardrobe for all seasons

Staple the Label dress, Ellery top (layered underneath), All Saints Live leather Jacket, Acne boots

With one more month of winter to go, it may be a bit early to break out those spring/summer dresses or purchase those new beautiful spring clothes appearing in shops.  Or is it?

Rather than impatiently waiting for warmer temperatures, why not get creative with your wardrobe and play with layers to extend the life of your wardrobe? Layering is such an effective styling technique to add interest to an outfit and also re-invigorate items which may have been relegated to the back of your closet (case in point- the zara cami worn in my previous post had been sitting in my wardrobe for a good year and half until it dawned on me to layer!)

One of the simplest tricks to wear dresses in cooler temperatures is to layer long sleeves under them. Whilst the no brainer option is to use a simple long sleeve tee, why not use something more unexpected and interesting? Shapes are quite dramatic at the moment, with flares currently trending. I’ve decided to use this as inspiration and layer this Staple the Label dress over an oversized flared shirt for a different spin on the ordinary.

Whilst I was lucky to get away with ankle boots as it was a relatively mild winter’s day (20 degrees celcius), if it is a cooler, use over the knee boots for warmth without sacrificing style. Top it off with a leather jacket for edge and you’ve successfully styled a summer dress for winter!

The belt on everyone’s minds

Gucci belt, Mother jeans, MCQ blazer, Zara camisole, the White Label Project shirt, Acne boots, Alexander Wang Bag

Gucci is dominating the spotlight at the moment with so many covetable items to drool over- THAT Dionysus bag, THOSE horse bit loafers (just to name a few).  However if you want a slice of luxury that won’t break the budget (sort of),  Gucci’s new season statement belt is the perfect solution. It’s such a versatile piece that instantly lifts any outfit.  For extra versatility I bought a size that fits both around my waist and hips- so it can be worn with low slung jeans or high waist skirts.

I couldn’t resist using the 90s as styling inspiration for this belt’s first outing.  I adore layering slinky camisoles over long sleeves as it’s effortless styling that looks great but is also practical.

A belt can be the accessory you need to polish off an outfit and when it’s as good as this one, it can take your look to the next level.

Elegantly Unique

EOD Sheba Pumps, Ellery skirt, Michael Lo Sordo blouse, Alexander Wang bag

Fast fashion and buying pieces which only last a season no longer appeals to me. I’ve become more selective with my wardrobe and these days I curate pieces which are of the moment but do not date, and have a point of difference which sets that piece apart from the mainstream.

EOD shoes fits my fashion philosophy perfectly. Designed by former architect, Ashley Lim, EOD’s shoes are aesthetically unique and beautiful. They are of exceptional quality (hand crafted in a small family owned work shop in Seoul) and because of Ashley’s architecture background, they are superior in design and extremely comfortable.

I am wearing EOD’s “Sheba pumps”, an eye catching design  that adds elegance to any outfit. Whilst I have matched the elegance of the shoe design with a long line Ellery skirt and jewel toned Michael Lo Sordo blouse, these shoes can certainly be worn in a more casual context and dressed down with a pair of jeans.

EOD recently collaborated with Third Form for Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week 2016, sending super cool mules with interesting perforation and zipper details down the runway, perfectly matching Third Form’s designs. I anticipate big things for this brand and cannot wait to see more beautiful and exciting designs to come from this label!

Beauty is painless

New Balance 620 sneakers, Zara coat, AG jeans, Rag & Bone shirt, Dylan Kain bag

I confess that I’m a traitor to the true definition of a fashionista- when it comes to clothes, my default position is comfort.

So when sneakers transformed into a “lifestyle” item, it was a joyous moment.  I love the unexpected juxtaposition of wearing a dressier outfit with a cool pair of kicks.

Whilst I’ve gone for no brainer styling, wearing these New Balance 620s with a pair of ripped jeans, I can’t wait to wear them with an elegant skirt.  In this context beauty is in fact painless.

Dressing down a cocktail dress

Christopher Esber dress, Mother Jeans, ATP Atelier sandals, APC Bag

My approach towards fashion has evolved as I have gotten older. It’s no longer about abundance but rather about building a smarter, smaller wardrobe that works harder.  Each piece I curate should be able to sit within the intersection of a venn diagram and be used for multiple dress codes.

I purchased this Christopher Esber cocktail dress for a ridiculously cheap price at a recent warehouse sale (when it’s more than 80% off, you don’t think, you just handover the credit card lol). Rather than waiting for a “special occasion”,  I’ve dressed it down so it’s appropriate for a smart casual setting by layering it over cropped jeans.  Flat slides and a day bag also instantly work to tone down the dressy vibe.

What is your approach to fashion? Do you try to purchase pieces that work double duty?

Wearing 3 statement pieces

Tome Shirt, Insider Crop Step Fray jeans by Mother, Boots by Ego Shoes

If you have a more minimal aesthetic then a statement piece takes on a different definition. It doesn’t shout but speaks confidently. The piece is on trend and has a edge, whether in terms of design or quality.

The outfit I’m wearing is a timeless combination- white shirt, blue jeans, black ankle boots. However ever single piece has a twist which makes this outfit special

This tome white shirt is a blogger favourite and for good reason.  The open back falls beautifully and is just ridiculously photogenic.

Blue jeans have been given an update with an asymmetric raw hem. If you are deft with a pair of scissors why not give life to an old pair of jeans by giving them a chop?

And the perspex heel on this ankle boot is just fun and a bit futuristic.

Paying attention to the little details can result in a big statement in your outfit.

The New Denim

Insider Crop Step Fray Jeans by Mother, Chosen by Tuchuzy camisole, Asos Belt, Dylan Kain Bag, Vialis shoes from Shoe I Am

Skinny, boyfriend , distressed- these jeans have been solid staples for a number of seasons. However if you’re looking for a new pair of jeans, it’s time to bypass these styles and upgrade your denim game.

Refresh your wardrobe with a new shape- think wide legs, cropped flares or full length flares in a modern fit, or focus on a raw hem.

The raw, fringed hem has been haunting me for months and I finally found the perfect incarnation with the Insider Crop Step Fray by Mother Denim.  There are so many subtle details that I love, the asymmetric raw hem that will only look better with wear and tear, the cropped length, slight kicked flare, high waist, and classic dark blue wash.  In terms of fit, these jeans fit true to size and are super comfortable thanks to the inclusion of elastane in the fabric.

So if you’ve been living in skinny jeans for the past few years, go beyond your style comfort zone and look at investing in a new denim style.
