Dion Lee Quarter Shirt, Bassike pants, Alexander Wang bag, Birkenstocks

Dion lee is an absolute master at tailoring and this season he has designed the perfect white shirt with a twist.  This shirt features buttons running along  the back, sides, and front, which allows it to be worn in a number of ways. I love this idea as it lends a modern aesthetic to a wardrobe classic and also allows it to transform from work to play seamlessly.  Obviously unbottoned shirts are not appropriate for work, however for lazy, hot summer days, they feel very apt.

Fashion is fickle. Hottest items swiftly become yesterdays look. And as quickly as those trends disappear they appear again.

The 90s stomach bearing crop top is back with a vengeance. The problem with the crop top- It looks ADORABLE on the hanger. It’s small, it’s cute, you just want to take it home with you.  Once you have it home with you, what do you wear it with?

Here are some styling tips to make that crop top work.

Balance proportions

Crop tops by definition are tiny pieces of clothing. The key to keeping crop tops classy is to ensure that you pair it bottoms that have coverage.

Midi skirts are a great pairing as well as wide legs pants or culottes.

Only show bit of tummy skin

Models look amazing in crop tops paired with low slung slouch pants.  But for the rest of us mere mortals, it is much less intimidating and more comfortable to buy crop tops that end at the top of your ribs or belly button and to pair it with highwaisted bottoms.  This look is universally flattering. It elongates the leg and also focuses the eye on the skinniest part of your waist.

Choose a style that you’re comfortable in

In the end confidence rules.  There are so many crop top styles of out at the moment-  figure hugging options,  looser, figure skimming tops and all are all cute in their own right.  Go with what you’re comfortable in, because confidence makes an outfit.

Bec and Bridge pinstripe camisole, Manning Cartell wide leg pants, Vagabond slides, Issey Miyake bao bao bag, Jane Lambert Hat

Finally, the cool  Winter air has departed and Spring has arrived like a warm hug.

The trends for Spring/Summer have been out in force and I’ve taken  a bookmark out of several of them with this look.

White out

I love this monochrome trend.  It’s fresh, It’s chic, it IS Summer.   Don’t worry if  your pieces are not all the same shade of white- slight variance will not affect the overall look.

To create interest in an all white ensemble, try to incorporate different textures, for example combining cotton, silk and leather

Pinstripes

The pintripe- often stiff and associated traditionally with corporate wear, this pattern has had a serious makeover with designers using it in playful, youthful and unexpected shapes.  Michael Lo Sordo’s recent collection used pinstipes in asymmetrical skirts, bralettes and oversized shirts. Dion Lee incorporated pinstripes in more classic cotton blazers and wide leg pants with a contemporary twist – vertical zipper detailing on the hips.

Bec and Bridge have used pinstripes in cute flirty shorts, camisoles, airy mini dresses and longer plunging crossover dresses.

I’ve chosen this Bec and Bridge camisole as my pinstripe piece of choice for this summer. It’s a piece that can mix and match with other wardrobe staples and the crossover back is sexy detailing for warm summer days and nights.

Slide sandals

Hurrah for fugdals.  Opinion dividing- yes- but I’m all for them. I’m a flats girl through and through and comfort rules when it comes to footwear for me.

Slides are a shoe for any occasion, they dress down more formal outfits and in my opinion look great with a wide leg pant.

Panama Hats

Not really a trend, but hats are slowly creeping into my life. I find they add a certain panache to an outfit.   Plus we should all take sun protection very seriously 🙂

Wearing one label head to toe

Wearing one label head to toe.

There are different schools of thought on this topic. (Ok i’ll be honest I’ve done absolutely no research and I’m just pulling this off the top of my head)

Unless sponsored by the brand this could indicate a complete lack of creativity.  A  marketer’s dream with too much cash.  A fashion tragic. On the other end of the spectrum there are strong arguments for wearing one brand. The aesthetic  and feel is cohesive and the clothes are specifically designed to match each other. This tends to make your life a little easier as it takes less thought to put together a respectable outfit.

So here I am wearing a bassike two piece.  These pieces are simple, streamlined and just work.  And if it gives you confidence, well that’s all that matters isn’t it?
